On a trip to Cascais, Portugal, this past June we attended a conference held by the publishing body FIPP. A culinary excursion to the Time Out Market in the heart of Lisbon was part of the programme before the annual congress got into full swing. That first visit, a day before the congress began, planted a seed with Yvonne Shaff, the MD of YourLuxury Africa that was so intriguing we had to return a day after the Cascais conference concluded.

Our July issue is inspired by a TED Talk titled How Radical Travel Will Fix Every Problem in Your Life delivered by Andrew Lee Miller in a small public library in Croatia late last year. Andrew was born in the mostly farming state of Ohio in the United States, in a village of only 3 000 people. In his talk, he shares his life story that saw him leave Ohio for the first time ever in a very depressed state following his grandfather’s death by freak accident.

One of my earliest contacts with the world of luxury fashion through an African lens took place in 2002. It was an incidental discovery I stumbled upon because of my love for film. To catch up on news from the 2002 Academy Awards, I had to wait a week and read about them in the weekly magazines. Naturally, the focus was on the red-carpet fashion, and that year, Will Smith (nominated for his role as Muhammad Ali) wore a British-Ghanaian designer by the name of Ozwald Boateng.

To get to the front door of Maison Noir, one of the exclusive-use villas in Cape Town’s Future Found Sanctuary, you drive through a grand black gate on a bend in one of the slopey streets of Hout Bay. Once opened, it reveals a secluded seven-acre getaway against a setting that never gets old: Table Mountain serving as a well- suited backdrop to the estate’s sustainably landscaped garden. The private mountain retreat houses three villas that operate as 11 individual rooms.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SHOW IN HONG KONG, AND WHAT INSPIRED THE COLLECTION? Hong Kong is one of my favourite places – beautiful culture, beautiful people, lots of creativity. There’s a wealth of tradition here, some kept closely preserved and some responding to newer influences. It’s an incredibly vibrant place, and I’m a vibrations person. When I started to think about the idea of the show and the vibrations connected to it, it made me think of Hawaii. The energy in Hawaii is amazing.
