Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat did not follow due procedure when filing a complaint against the late Albert Ojwang, who was killed at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. Mr Lagat stepped aside on Monday as investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) into Ojwang’s death continue. Ojwang, a teacher by profession, was accused of operating a social media account on X that published content about the DIG.

Mr Lagat, who has been under immense public pressure to resign over the death of the teacher in a cell at Central Police Station in Nairobi, yesterday announced that he was stepping aside to allow investigations.

Officers who spoke to the Nation questioned why it was taking Knec so long to pay them for their services during last year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. However, it emerged that some had been paid.

The sudden death of Albert Ojwang at Nairobi Central Police Station led to the interdiction of a senior officer and his subordinates. Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja has interdicted the Officer Commanding the Station (OCS) at Nairobi's Central Police Station, as well as all officers who were on duty the night Mr Ojwang died. This decision was made amid public concern over the circumstances surrounding Mr Ojwang's death.
