    A Democrat who has worked behind the scenes on many campaigns has launched her own campaign for governor. Julie Stauch of West Des Moines said Iowans are "disgusted” by the state’s elected leaders. “Everything’s really broken and it needs to be fixed, and I’m a problem solver. It’s what I’ve done in everything I do,” Stauch told Radio Iowa. “We have a governor and a Legislature that, for the last at least seven years and maybe 15, think their job is to create problems for the people of Iowa.

    Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation to provide paid family leave to new parents who work in state government. Parents who give birth will get four weeks of paid leave and non-birthing parents will get one week of leave. The same family leave policy will apply to state employees who adopt a child.

    Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law that establishes new rules for crypto ATMs in Iowa that let people buy or sell digital currency. The law limits transaction amounts, so customers may transfer or accept no more than $1,000 worth of crypto in a single day. It also limits crypto ATM fees to no more than 15% of the transaction amount. Additionally, crypto ATM operators must provide a full refund if a customer reports they were scammed and can show there was fraud involved in the transaction.

    An eastern Iowa attorney who served two terms in the Iowa House is running for attorney general. Nate Willems, a Democrat from Mount Vernon, said his top priorities would be assisting county attorneys in gaining convictions for violent felonies and protecting Iowans from corporate crimes.

    A state board has agreed to pay a $4.2 million settlement to the brother of a 16-year-old who died of starvation in their adoptive parents home in Perry. Investigators say Sabrina Ray was abused and starved to death by her adoptive mother, who’s serving a life prison sentence, and her adoptive father, sentenced to serve 80 years in prison. Sabrina, who died in 2017, and three of her siblings had been in the foster care system.
