One hundred years from now, when historians recount the events of 2024, they’ll almost certainly write about the division of the country. They’ll describe how Democrats and Republicans couldn’t seem to agree on anything. They’ll probably have plenty to say about Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the intensity of the presidential election. But I hope our children and grandchildren will read about more than our choice for president or our stance on immigration.

If every single generation in American history has one thing in common, it’s nostalgia. Sooner or later, it infects us all. The 82-year-old still remembers when gas was a quarter. The 42-year-old still remembers a world without cell phones. From the eldest to the youngest, we all know how to harken back to a mythical golden age when things were just … better. Nostalgia can be comforting and even humorous, but it can also be harmful. Was there ever really a “golden age” in America?

In his “Farewell Address” of 1796, George Washington warned the American people about the potential dangers of political parties. In his view, parties would eventually become “potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the Power of the People and to usurp for themselves the reins of Government.” He’d seen the writing on the wall.
