    Dry conditions have prompted the posting of drought watches and warnings in many pockets of the Delaware River watershed, and the declaration of a “water supply emergency” by the Delaware River Basin Commission. Though the river itself is not in a state of drought, fish and wildlife in the watershed are feeling the impacts of the prolonged lack of precipitation — in ways both positive and negative.

    The Delaware River and Bay Authority secured a $20 million federal grant to help cover the cost of designing and buying a new diesel/electric hybrid ferry for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry fleet. Since its operations began in 1964, more than 50 million passengers have traversed the 17-mile span between Cape May, N.J., and Lewes, Del., aboard the three-vessel fleet, which welcomes foot traffic, vehicles and bicycles.

The top five sectors for visitor spending were: lodging, restaurants, gas, groceries and retail.

    Public tours of the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse off Cape Henlopen, Del., have been halted indefinitely after a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report raised safety concerns about accessing the site and found needed repair costs to be near or more than $100 million. Built in 1926, the lighthouse sits offshore at the south end of the 8,000-foot-long Harbor of Refuge breakwater.
