Sithembiso Mdlalose makes an appearance at Palm Ridge magistrate's court on 76 counts of murder. To some people in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, where Sithembiso Mdlalose was born and raised, he is remembered as a churchgoer and maths wizard who used to tutor the neighbourhood children. In Gauteng, however, the 31-year-old has been accused of being the alleged mass murderer who   started a fire that killed 76 people at the hijacked Usindiso building in Joburg.

As each day passed, he felt he was failing the victims. When W/O Tlala John Mokoena was assigned the case in 2020, there were 70 dockets, and by the time he caught Nkosinathi Phakathi in March 2021, there were more rape cases opened against him.
