1 INTRODUCTION Methadone is a full agonist of the opioid μ receptor and is used to treat opioid-dependent patients.1 It is the most common drug causing overdose deaths among drug addicts in Norway.2 Methadone is also used as chronic pain medication for the treatment of cancer patients.3 Methadone is a synthetic opioid with a single chiral centre that forms two enantiomers, R-methadone (levo-methadone) and S-methadone (dextro-methadone).
