Anaesthetic-decongestant sprays such as Co-phenylcaine (lignocaine 5% and phenylephrine 0.5%) are commonly used prior to sinonasal endoscopy and instrumentation. Lignocaine is less potent than other local anaesthetics such as tetracaine, and both lignocaine and phenylephrine are often perceived as tasting unpleasant. Tetracaine 2% with oxymetazoline 0.05% provides more potent topical nasal anaesthesia than Co-phenylcaine, with a more rapid onset of action.
