The other day, an Israeli intelligence officer who shares information with British agencies in London told me about her work. “Iran is the big focus for us. But for the British, it is maybe third on their priority list,” she said. Fair enough. Tehran may be a grave threat to Britain but due to its apocalyptic obsession with Jerusalem, it poses a far greater danger to Israel. Despite the differences in priorities, however, the Britain-Israel intelligence collaboration has long been very fruitful.

This time last year as we entered 2024, barely weeks after the October 7 massacre, Jews in Israel and across the diaspora were united. The unspeakable evil of what happened on that day led us to put our differences in perspective. We were united in grief, united in resolve and united in spirit. A year on, that unity is less firm.

Last year’s Holocaust Memorial Day was the most poignant since 1945, coming just months after the worst slaughter of Jews since the Shoah. A year on, and the incantation ‘Never Again’ is more vital than it has ever been. Although we do not know the exact number of hostages seized by Hamas who have died in captivity, for example, we know that it is many of them. If the current ceasefire deal lasts, we may soon find out the full, terrible details.

Is Ireland the most antisemitic country in the Western world? In an apparent bid to clinch that shameful title, its president, Michael Higgins – who was recently branded an “antisemitic liar” by Israel’s foreign minister – was invited to deliver the keynote address at the National Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration. Understandably, Ireland’s chief rabbi and the chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland both objected in the strongest terms.

It’s no coincidence that the best two films in this year’s crop of Oscar and Bafta hopefuls – The Brutalist and A Real Pain – are the least sexed-up and the most Jewish; the latter overtly Jewish, in that its narrative occasion is a visit to a Nazi concentration camp in Poland, the former more subtly and pervasively so, as a case study in creative genius both hobbled and quickened by the experience of the Holocaust. Both will annoy you in some measure.

In the postwar period, the British-Jewish community assumed a significance in terms of world Jewry that it did not have prior to the Holocaust. After the murder of six million Jews across the Channel, Britain’s modest community of 400,000 people found itself (for twenty years) the largest in Europe, a reality that thrust British Jewish society into the international limelight as a global hub of Jewish life.
