HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WHNT) — Samford University officially introduced Huntsville native Lennie Acuff as the school’s new men’s basketball head coach. Acuff returns to his home state after spending the past six seasons at the helm of the Lipscomb program. Before his time in Nashville, Acuff spent 22 years as the head coach at UAH. Acuff described the Samford job as his “dream job,” and he can’t wait to get to work with his new team. “I am grateful, humble and incredibly blessed to be here.

(WHNT) — Alabama women’s basketball star Sarah Ashlee Barker has been selected as the No. 9 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Barker is headed to the West Coast to join the Los Angeles Sparks. She became Alabama’s first WNBA draftee since the Las Vegas Aces selected Brittany Davis in 2023. The Alabama native finished her career with the Crimson Tide with a historic performance against Maryland in the second round of the women’s NCAA tournament; she finished with a school-record 45 points.

The Mobile native was an SEC All-Freshman team member; Philon finished the season averaging 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game. In his announcement, Philon said, “Wearing the Script A this year has been one of the greatest honors of my life”.
