The continuing military escalation in the Red Sea poses profound consequences for the African continent's economy, security, and environment. While a handful of African countries may stand to benefit, the majority are poised to bear the brunt of high inflation and environmental degradation. Out of the eight countries adjacent to the Red Sea, five are African. However, the current media and political treatment of the crisis ignores the losses incurred by Africa.

2024 will be marked by the expansion of the BRICS group to formally include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to its current members (Russia, Brazil, China, India, South Africa). Argentina was also due to join on January 1 but withdrew its plans just at the last minute. It’s the largest-ever expansion of the bloc and the first since South Africa joined in 2010.
