Indian Parallel Cinema, South Asia’s first post-colonial art film movement, came of age in the late 1960s. There had been precursors in the Bengali tradition of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak that emerged in the mid to late 1950s, with Ray’s realist drama Pather Panchali (1955) finding an international festival audience.
