Mutated nucleophosmin (NPM1) is one of the most common molecular abnormalities in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), occurring in ∼30% of cases regardless of cytogenetics.1 Wild-type NPM1 contains 12 exons and encodes for a ubiquitous multifunctional protein that shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm.
