The completion of the genome has paved the way for genome-wide association studies (GWAS), which explained certain proportions of heritability. GWAS are not optimally suited to detect non-linear effects in disease risk, possibly hidden in non-additive interactions (epistasis). Alternative methods for epistasis detection using e.g. deep neural networks (DNNs) are currently under active development.

AbstractWe address long-standing open questions raised by Williamson, Goemans, Vazirani and Mihail pertaining to the design of approximation algorithms for problems in network design via the primal-dual method (Williamson et al. in Combinatorica 15(3):435–454, 1995. https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01299747). Williamson et al. prove an approximation ratio of two for connectivity augmentation problems where the connectivity requirements can be specified by uncrossable functions.

With boosters or updated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination no longer required/mandated by many businesses and organizations [1–3], individuals now must decide whether to get the updated annual COVID-19 vaccine. Moreover, with the cost of vaccines no longer covered by the government [4, 5], individuals will either have to use their insurance to cover the cost or pay out-of-pocket (OOP).

With rapid imaging technology advancements, an array of extensive biomedical studies, including the UK Biobank (UKB) (Sudlow et al., 2015), Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (Casey et al., 2018), Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) (Weiner et al., 2017), and Human Connectome Project (HCP) (Somerville et al., 2018), are underway or completed. These studies encompass diverse data types: neuroimaging data, genetics, clinical records, and health details.
