    Tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in Darkness Into Light at more than 200 locations in Ireland and abroad on Saturday. The annual event is a fundraiser for Pieta, a charity that supports people affected by suicide or self-harm. Participants will walk 5km, beginning at around 4.15am on Saturday, as the sun rises. A spokesperson for Pieta said the event is “more than just a walk”.

It is understood that at least one other premises in Stoneybatter was raided as part of a Garda crackdown on an organised crime group suspected of being involved in prostitution and money laundering. Searches were conducted by more than 100 gardaí at businesses and homes across Dublin, Kildare and Meath on Wednesday.

    Diarmuid Martin, former Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, said it’s “very clear that [Leo XIV] wants to follow in the line of Pope Francis, and I think that’s probably why he was elected”. Speaking on Drivetime on Radio 1 on Thursday, Mr Martin said there are “many divisions in the Church” but the fact the new pontiff was elected so quickly is “a sign that he enjoys a great strength of unity among the cardinals”.
