Tens of thousands of people are expected to take part in Darkness Into Light at more than 200 locations in Ireland and abroad on Saturday. The annual event is a fundraiser for Pieta, a charity that supports people affected by suicide or self-harm. Participants will walk 5km, beginning at around 4.15am on Saturday, as the sun rises. A spokesperson for Pieta said the event is “more than just a walk”.

Nearly a quarter of regular e-scooter users have been involved in a collision, while one in three have experienced a near miss, research published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has found. The report published on Friday found that e-scooters were now perceived as the most dangerous form of transport in Ireland, surpassing motorcycles in terms of perceived risk.

A takeaway in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7, was among the premises raided by gardaí investigating prostitution and money laundering. It is understood that at least one other premises in Stoneybatter was raided as part of a Garda crackdown on an organised crime group suspected of being involved in prostitution and money laundering. Searches were conducted by more than 100 gardaí at businesses and homes across Dublin, Kildare and Meath on Wednesday.

Diarmuid Martin, former Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, said it’s “very clear that [Leo XIV] wants to follow in the line of Pope Francis, and I think that’s probably why he was elected”. The Government is considering a range of proposals aimed at reducing the length of time the State’s asylum-seeking process takes. The most contentious proposal is that asylum seekers will no longer have an automatic right to an oral hearing if they appeal a decision.

A number of residents at a housing estate in Dublin 13 say they fear for their safety due to antisocial behaviour and reckless driving of e-scooters. Residents of Parkside estate in north Dublin say they have been witnessing a serious and dangerous increase in crime and antisocial behaviour over recent months. They claim there has been an increase in burglaries, drug use, intimidation and assaults. They believe those involved live locally, but not in the estate itself.

Proposals that would allow people to swap their US or Canadian driver‘s licences for Irish licences without sitting a driving test have been hailed as “pragmatic” by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy. A group of people who live in Ireland and hold North American licences have put forward a number of alternatives to sitting the driving test, due to extensive waiting lists. Waiting times for driving tests have risen significantly, with some people waiting up to 10 months.

While not reaching the high temperatures seen during the week, it’s expected to be quite mild. Highest temperatures will range from 13 to 17 degrees, but it will be cooler in the north and east with highs of 10 to 13 degrees. The warmest conditions will be in southern areas. Tonight will be dry with largely clear skies, lowest temperatures will range from 1 to 5 degrees.
