    Mayor Daniel Lurie has made the 16th Street BART Plaza one of his targets to illustrate how the city can make a difference. For years, the plaza has been a place of violence, drug use and mayhem. Recently, unpermitted vending has made it more chaotic. On quieter days – and during earlier crackdowns – it is also a place where local men and women who live in the city’s SROs can hang out and get some fresh air.

    The 16th Street BART plaza is the new home, at least temporarily, of a San Francisco Police Department mobile command unit —a bus-sized vehicle that arrived Wednesday afternoon at around 2 p.m., motoring onto an area that has recently become the center of attention for both City Hall and law enforcement. It is unclear if officers will be deployed out of the vehicle or if it will simply serve as a visual reminder to denizens of a police presence.
