Summary Indonesia is South-East Asia’s second-largest soymeal consumer, but it has no crushing industry.     The flood of global vegetable oil has slowed over recent months, courtesy of historically low prices and record biodiesel demand. Since April 2018, leading demand indicators such as POGO (the Palm Oil-Gas Oil price ratio) and the B-100 FOB Midwest vs on-highway Diesel price ratio have tilted in biodiesel’s favour. Biodiesel’s bargain status has accelerated global consumption of palm oil and soy oil, which account for over half of its feedstock.

    In May 2023, the European Council adopted the EU Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR). Large and medium-sized companies that place palm oil and palm oil derivatives in the EU-27 (a major palm oil and palm oil derivatives importer) have an 18-month grace period to comply with the law, which went into force in June Initially, the global palm oil supply chain will face challenges, as investment throughout the supply chain is needed to comply with EUDR requirements.

    February 2023 Currently, Asia is the largest collector of used cooking oil (UCO) globally, but the majority of its supplies is exported due to limited consumption in the region. Looking ahead, Rabobank expects Asia’s consumption of UCO and its products (UCO&P) to increase in the medium term due to global decarbonization efforts in international maritime and aviation sectors.
