Normally you hear about a defense helping out its pitcher. On a blustery Thursday afternoon game, however, it was the Grizzlies pitching helping out the defense. Aaron Rolfe and Nash Opitz combined for a one-hitter as the Grizzlies (3-2) beat Jefferson (1-1) at home. Rolfe started and gave up one run on one hit in the first inning, but nullified the Jefferson bats the rest of the way, racking up seven strikeouts while throwing 39 of 55 pitches for strikes.

The McMinnville High softball team split four games this week at the North Medford Tournament. The Grizzlies blew out South Salem 20-0; lost one-run games to West Salem, 3-4, and Sheldon (defending back-to-back state champions), 4-3; and finishing with an 8-5 win over North Medford. On Monday, the Grizzlies (3-2), ranked No. 5 in the preseason statewide coaches’ poll, went toe-to-toe with Sheldon, the preseason No. 1 team, which was on a 42-game win streak against Oregon opponents.
