1 INTRODUCTION Unravelling spatially structured ecological patterns is a task that has engaged geographical ecologists and macroecologists for decades. Yet, despite impressive advancements in statistics and modelling, scientists still debate over how to detect and account for biases that arise due to the effect of space (Beale et al., 2007; Diniz-Filho et al., 2003; Hodges & Reich, 2010; Lennon, 2000).

Olen tutkinut ekologiaa ja evoluutiobiologiaa matemaattisella ja tilastollisella mallinnuksella 25 viime vuotta. Näistä ensimmäiset 23 ja puoli vuotta ajattelin, että keskityn ammattitutkijoiden systemaattisesti keräämiin aineistoihin ja jätän kansalaistieteen mahdollisuuksien hyödyntämisen muille niiden ongelmallisuuden takia.

1 INTRODUCTION In species distribution modeling, a model's predictive performance is routinely assessed by determining how well the model is able to predict either the same data that it was originally fitted to (explanatory power) or to predict validation data independent from the training data used for model fitting (predictive power on hold-out data).
