    A former CNRP commune chief who was blocked from leaving the country last year had a retrial at a Phnom Penh court after she was convicted in absentia for incitement. The case is linked to an incitement conviction against another CNRP commune chief from Banteay Meanchey, Lanh Thavry, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison in August 2022 for comments she made on Facebook between 2018 and 2019.

    Prominent unionist Rong Chhun joined the Candlelight Party on Tuesday, months shy of the national election, saying he expected a “big achievement” for the party in July. The unionist, who was previously the president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association, made the announcement Tuesday morning in Phnom Penh. He had teased the announcement on Monday, stating he would either stay with his union work or enter politics.
