    It’s officially summer, and the heat isn’t letting up anytime soon. While nobody has ever called Sonoma County the hottest place in the world, it can still get pretty toasty. Luckily, our home has a plethora of wonderful rivers, lakes and beaches that allow us to cool off and enjoy the sunshine. And the great thing is, visits to the water don’t have to break the bank.

    Petaluma: Join Lafferty docents Carole Coates and Teddy Herzog and discover what a 165 year old ranch looks like after almost 100 years of returning to the wild. From 9 a.m. to noon, participants will hike around Lafferty Ranch, a 270-acre property on the west side of Sonoma Mountain. Registration for the hike in advance is required, as the property is only open to the public on special guided outings like this one.

    Kitchen help soughtMeals on Wheels, a meal program for seniors in Sonoma County, needs help in its Santa Rosa kitchen. Volunteers are needed to make salads on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Job training for chef preparation is provided. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old with adult supervision, or 16 years old without supervision.
