It’s officially summer, and the heat isn’t letting up anytime soon. While nobody has ever called Sonoma County the hottest place in the world, it can still get pretty toasty. Luckily, our home has a plethora of wonderful rivers, lakes and beaches that allow us to cool off and enjoy the sunshine. And the great thing is, visits to the water don’t have to break the bank.

Petaluma: Join Lafferty docents Carole Coates and Teddy Herzog and discover what a 165 year old ranch looks like after almost 100 years of returning to the wild. From 9 a.m. to noon, participants will hike around Lafferty Ranch, a 270-acre property on the west side of Sonoma Mountain. Registration for the hike in advance is required, as the property is only open to the public on special guided outings like this one.

Kitchen help soughtMeals on Wheels, a meal program for seniors in Sonoma County, needs help in its Santa Rosa kitchen. Volunteers are needed to make salads on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Job training for chef preparation is provided. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old with adult supervision, or 16 years old without supervision.

Santa Rosa: On the first Sunday of every month, Rancho Mark West opens to the public, giving curious hikers the option to create their own adventure. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., meander around the park, exploring redwoods, hillsides and creeks. This time is extra special, as they have an exciting surprise guest. Lynn Houser, a botanist who has been hiking around Sonoma County for over 25 years, will be joining the group to look for and answer questions about spring wildflowers.

‘Remarkable’ harbor seal birth caught on camera in Sea Ranch

A Sea Ranch resident captured the “remarkable” birth of a harbor seal pup on camera earlier this month. Karen Wilkinson, a volunteer seal docent for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, was leading a small tour of the Tide Pool Overlook seal rookery in The Sea Ranch on April 16 when she spotted what she said looked like a very large or bloated seal. Wilkinson, who enjoys taking nature photos as a hobby, took out her camera and trained it on the seal, taking photos and video.
New Sonoma County Juvenile Hall music studio provides positive outlet for incarcerated youth

A new music studio has opened in the unlikeliest of places, a reminder to incarcerated youth that while they may not be physically free, their voices can be. Conceived and created by staff members at Sonoma County Juvenile Hall, the Free Voices studio is run by Juvenile Correctional Counselor Giovanni Barbieri, a 20-year juvenile hall employee and a musician himself.

Volunteers needed for The Longest DayThe Longest Day is a fundraising event put on by the Alzheimer’s Association during the summer solstice. Participants “fight the darkness” of Alzheimer’s and all other forms of dementia through a fundraising activity of their choice. The organization is looking for volunteers to be committee members, help promote the event and raise money. Duties include posting on social media, phoning past participants and more.
