1 Introduction It has been discussed for decades whether species occur most frequently or abundantly at their geographic center, and more recently, at their environmental niches' center (Dallas et al. 2017; Soberón et al. 2018; Fristoe et al. 2023). Species, including tree species, are adapted to environmental conditions (Flood and Hancock 2017); consequently, species are expected to have preferred points or intervals on unidimensional environmental gradients (Toledo et al. 2012).
