Systemic amyloidosis is a multisystem disease secondary to misfolding of proteins that aggregate into amyloid fibrils. When amyloid fibrils are present in the interstitial space between myocytes, cardiac amyloidosis results, leading to cellular injury and reduced myocardial compliance. Nine types of precursor proteins have been reported to date, with immunoglobulin light chain (AL-CA) and transthyretin-related (ATTR-CA) accounting for more than 95% of amyloid-related cardiomyopathies.
