IntroductionLeishmaniasis is a vector-borne infectious disease caused by intracellular parasites of the Leishmania genus (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). The parasite is transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae). Human visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by L.donovani, is fatal without treatment and leads to approximately 50,000 annual deaths worldwide (1).
