On January 14, US President Joe Biden announced that he removed Cuba from the list of the US State Sponsors of Terrorism. The announcement was celebrated by human rights activists, elected officials, including Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and progressive and left movements globally. Cubans also hailed the move by the Biden administration but were clear in pointing out that its inclusion on the list in the first place was a great injustice.

On January 14, Guatemala’s Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) suspended a previous court order that would have required journalist José Rubén Zamora, founder of the newspaper El Periódico, to return to prison from his current house arrest. He was placed on house arrest after spending more than two years in jail for charges related to alleged money laundering.

Puerto Rico heads to the polls today in elections that could prove to be historic for the Caribbean island. On November 5, nearly two million Puerto Ricans will have the opportunity to elect their governor, resident commissioner, the island’s 78 mayors, as well as representatives to the Senate and the House of Representatives. In its status as an associated state, the people of Puerto Rico do not vote for president or have elected representatives in the US Congress.
