The possibility of using hydrogen (H2) as an energy carrier has been discussed for nearly half a century. While literature in the 1970s and 1980s noted its potential to enhance national energy security, (1−4) a more recent focus has been its role in decarbonization, particularly in end-use sectors that are difficult to electrify. Like electricity, hydrogen can be produced from numerous primary energy sources using different production processes.
