Australian sorghum growers are still waiting on demand from export markets. Picture via ShutterstockUS wheat led the falls on the news developing that China has supposedly cancelled or rolled several Australian wheat cargoes, adding to the cancellation from US exporters last week. The ASX May wheat contract was down in Australian currency $3 a tonne to $318.50 a tonne on Friday as they responded to reports of China's cancellations. European wheat markets also fell with the news.

ABARES forecasts the current sorghum crop at 1.5 million tonnes, but potential upside exists if northern region storms persist during the growing season. December rain has led to prosperous sorghum crops on Queensland's Darling Downs, with expectations of at least average yields. This challenges the initial forecast of 21 per cent decline in sorghum planted area for 2023-24 due to well-below average soil moisture levels.
