On April 1, Mark Carney, the Liberal leader and occasional Prime Minister, officially ended the consumer carbon tax, and Canadians celebrated a sharp drop at the gas pump. A little known consequence of the decision was the impact on the Canada Community-Building Fund, a federal program in place for two decades that used revenues from the “gas tax” to help municipalities pay for critical infrastructure, from transit projects to community pools and tens of thousands of local initiatives in between.

Hundreds of workers responsible for maintaining Peel’s social safety net are expressing displeasure with their employer as the vast majority recently voted in favour of going on strike. The vote comes after months of workers dealing with an affordability crisis that has increased service demand, heightened rates of homelessness and led to more vulnerable residents in need of mental health and addiction treatment.

Peel’s supervised consumption site is no longer offering harm reduction services as of Tuesday despite an injunction granted by the Superior Court of Justice last week that would allow similar facilities to continue operating for the time being. “Peel’s supervised consumption will NOT be providing safe consumption services or drug checking services past March 31, 2025.
