IndusLaw has joined European law firm CMS to become CMS IndusLaw. In line with the CMS model, IndusLaw will remain an independent law firm under the CMS brand. The recently notified Bar Council of India (BCI) Rules allow foreign law firms and lawyers to practice in India, albeit only on foreign and international law in non-litigious matters, and on a reciprocal basis. Previous attempts to liberalise the Indian legal market have been met with staunch opposition – either for the absence of safeguards for Indian firms and lawyers or the lack of clarity surrounding the regulations.

Society of Indian Law Firms President Lalit Bhasin has said that the Bar Council of India (BCI) move to allow the entry of foreign lawyers and law firms into India is premature. Explaining his rationale, Bhasin said,"Firstly, because the matter is still sub-judice before the Delhi High Court. Secondly, in view of the Supreme Court judgment in BCI vs AK Balaji, it was held that foreign lawyers cannot practice law in India - any type of practice, whether litigation or corporate.
