A girl who died after being struck by a car which crashed through a fence and on to a sports pitch was 10 years old and attending a regular football session, police said. Witnesses described a scene of "sheer panic" as the car appeared on the pitch at Kendal rugby club at about 17:00 GMT on Wednesday. An eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal, was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Families calling for a public inquiry into an NHS trust say they have been promised a decision next month. Relatives of former Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) mental health trust patients met Health Secretary Wes Streeting to raise their concerns about standards of care. Streeting said he was was taking the case for a public inquiry "extremely seriously". TEWV said it would "co-operate fully as required with openness and transparency".

A clean-up operation is under way as the devastation left by Storm Éowyn is laid bare. A city's library will close this month as part of a £3.3m transformation. Carlisle Library will be temporarily shut from 25 January until the end of February for preparatory works, Cumberland Council said. Service points will be available elsewhere in the city during this time, the authority added. The authority said a temporary library will open in part of the existing library at the end of February while the work is ongoing.

A clothes bank described as "life-changing" has warned it could close over running costs. Hartlepool ReLoved Clothing was originally set up to help families finding it hard to pay for school uniforms, but has since expanded to offer free donated clothes to children and adults, giving out 52,000 items since January 2023. Co-founder Natalie Frankland said £23,000 was needed for things like rent and utilities.

A group of football fans are hoping for a "Christmas miracle" to save a beloved music shop from closure. JG Windows music store in Newcastle's Central Arcade has been permanently closed and the company is expected to go into liquidation on 12 December. A group of Newcastle United fans has launched a fundraiser, hoping to raise the £500,000 needed to save it in a drive to "support the city and businesses".

According to the meteorological calendar, winter begins on 1 December and ends on the last day of February. However, snow and wintry showers are not unusual for the end of November.
