    In the past hour Donald Trump has said that Ukraine and Russia will “immediately start negotiations towards a ceasefire” after he spoke to Vladimir Putin by phone for more than two hours. The US leader had also earlier spoken to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Russian president appeared on state TV after his call, saying that he too favours a peaceful settlement but not committing to a ceasefire.

The Houthis in Yemen are one part of the tangle – attacking Israel and global shipping, claiming solidarity with Gaza’s Palestinian population. Over the weekend their attacks escalated.     At least 22 people have been killed in clashes in suburbs south of the Syrian capital Damascus – the second day of violence in Druze majority areas around the city. Security forces closed off roads and sent in reinforcements. Israel also said it had struck a group which was preparing to attack the area. The Druze are Arabs who practice a form of Shia Islam – with followers in Syria, Israel and Lebanon.
