Will tomorrow be what we would like it to be after the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) rape-murder? After all, it took this gruesome crime to remind us of our duty to protest against what we should not see happening in society. The health care system in West Bengal (and possibly in many other states) is steeped in corruption. Immoral and unethical practices of a few bring in money from various sources, a portion of which is shared with members of the party in power.

The masses are not rehearsing for an uprising; they are already in one. The spontaneity, volume, and expanse of participation visible this time have not been witnessed in many years. They are demanding justice. The sad incident of rape and murder of a doctor on duty in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, on the night of August 9 triggered this uprising. The incident has convulsed the entire nation. India’s head is bowed in shame.

A small market had sprung up where the asphalt highway turned to the left. The village stood behind it, hidden from view by a dense bamboo grove. The village had no electricity, but the market did. There were three tea-shops, two for sweetmeats, three for garments, one stationery store and two groceries. There was a godown, too, and a husking machine, besides a brick kiln at the back. People came from nearby villages.

In the US, more than 13,000 recipients of COVID-19 vaccines have filed injury claims with the federal government. In India, Venugopalan Govindan’s daughter Karunya died in July 2021 after taking the Covishield vaccine that was co-developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. He is contemplating moving the courts even though the national committee set up by the Indian government did not find sufficient evidence to conclude that her death was caused by the vaccine.
