Worldwide, the cuts are forecast to put the fight against the epidemic back by years, with a risk of infection rates and Aids cases rising to levels not seen since the turn of the century.

Mothae, now aged 24, was immunised against the human papillomavirus (HPV) during her primary school years in Lesotho, providing her with protection from cervical cancer. HPV is the cause of the vast majority of cases of cervical cancer, the most common cancer in Lesotho.

When 30-year-old Ithabeleng Mosele (not her real name) discovered that her husband was having an extramarital affair about a year ago, the fear of being infected with HIV shattered her. “That is when I started to feel uncomfortable and unsafe,” Mosele told VaccinesWork in a recent interview. Mosele comes from Lesotho – a country with the second-highest HIV prevalence rate in the world.
