AI AllyHangs up. Phone drops. Thud. She blinks back, tears, and looks up. Thyroid cancer, huh …Typing, click clack … thud. She sighs in relief. Texts friends, invites familyover for comfort. The next day, she callsher doctor ready to talk,ready to listen. “AI Ally” originally was written for medmic’s Fall / Winter 2024 Haiku Contest. While it was not selected as a winner (but another one of the poems did!), it influenced me to write with the restraints of the haiku convention.

The news is rife with articles about younger people getting cancer, heart attacks, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, and arthritis. We used to think of these as diseases of aging, but now we are finding high blood pressure and atherosclerosis in people as young as 20. The guidelines for colon cancer screening have been lowered to age 45 for people at normal risk. Experts can’t explain why this is happening.
