Discount retailer Dollar Tree (DLTR) , unlike some of its competitors, appears to be resonating well with consumers across the country as they battle inflation and a higher cost of living. In Dollar Tree’s first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that its same-store sales increased by 5.4% year-over-year as foot traffic in those stores rose by 2.5% during the quarter, and the average amount of money customers spent per purchase spiked by almost 3%.

In April, President Donald Trump made several crucial changes to his tariff policy (tariffs are taxes companies pay to import goods from overseas). He imposed a whopping 145% tariff on all goods imported from China.

According to a monthslong investigation from Consumer Reports, The Guardian and the Food & Environment Reporting Network, it alleges that Kroger shoppers have unknowingly been paying full price for a plethora of items in stores that were advertised as being on sale or discounted.

Kohl’s (KSS) , like many other mall retailers across the country, is battling a sharp change in consumer behavior amid recent economic uncertainty surrounding inflation and the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. In the midst of these challenges, Kohl’s has also been shuttering underperforming stores, announcing in January that it would close 27 of these locations in 15 states by April.
