About 150 University of Michigan students, faculty and community members gathered at the Michigan League Saturday afternoon to share personal experiences and perspectives about solitary confinement within the United States prison system. The statewide summit was organized by the Michigan Institute for Progressive Policy in partnership with the Open MI Door campaign to raise public awareness about the impacts of solitary confinement.

University of Michigan students hail from more than 120 countries and all 50 U.S. states. This year, the University’s Ann Arbor campus brought home the title for the largest international student population in the state of Michigan from 2023 to 2024, according to a report published by Open Doors, an annual census of international students in the United States from the Institute of International Education. The report stated that there are 11,766 total international students on the Ann Arbor campus.

The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing received a $3.94 million through the federal Health Resources and Service Administration in October to fund the new U-M Flint Educates Rural Nurses program. The program aims to recruit nursing students and improve healthcare outcomes in Michigan’s rural “thumb” region, which includes Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac and Tuscola counties. Beginning in January 2025, the UM-FERN program will support a cohort of eight students each year.

More than 150 University of Michigan students, faculty and community members gathered in Rackham Auditorium Friday evening to hear from award-winning author Sandra Cisneros. Ruth Behar, anthropology professor and longtime friend of Cisneros, joined the event as a moderator. She acclaimed Derek Bermel’s new opera adaptation of Cisneros’ “The House on Mango Street,” which is set to premiere at the 2025 Glimmerglass Festival.

Ruthven Building Monday afternoon to hear from Gretchen Keppel-Aleks and Lucy Hartley from the American Association of University Professors and Michael Atzmon and Nick Tobier from the Davis, Markert, and Nickerson Academic Freedom Lecture Committee.
