The stars of the film, John Wayne, Walter Pidgeon, Gene Autry and others arrived in Lawrence on April 3, 1940, via the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.

Tombaugh, who discovered the planet Pluto, described how it began in a 1986 oral history interview with George M. House, curator of the International Space Hall of Fame, at New Mexico State University (NMSU), in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In response to a question about how he got interested in astronomy, Tombaugh said it was because he enjoyed geography.

Central and Eastern Kansas experienced enormous amounts of precipitation in the summer of 1951. The area received above-normal rainfall in May and June, which caused rivers and streams to be higher than normal, ground water levels high, and the ground so saturated it could not absorb additional rainfall. Heavy rains fell in July, making the situation even worse. The Kansas River and its tributaries were filled to their banks and overflowing into the flood plain.
