    At the Pride Symposium at the beginning of the school year, I was asked what my one piece of advice was for college students. It is hard to encompass one thing that is supposed to support students in the hectic world of college, but there’s one thing I think most students need to hear — you don’t have to do it all. There are thousands of opportunities on campus. Students can join clubs, nonprofits, have an internship, volunteer or get a job.

    Hundreds of students came out to feast on cookies and cupcakes while enjoying four diverse drag performances at Desserts and Drag, hosted by the University Activity Board on Thursday. Onya Mann served as a performer and host, taking time to introduce each artist. In her performances she laid down on the stage, slowly bicycling her feet in the air and rolling on the ground.

    Faculty and students came together in Carmichael Gym on Thursday to learn traditional Ukrainian dance. Participants started slow, but quickly picked up speed and technique as they linked arms and laughed together. Together they paced out a stepping movement with the beat of an energetic accordion song. Participants practiced walking with the step and incorporating other moves like a spin between measures. The instructor of the course, Carrie (Tkacz) Lang, taught with grace and wisdom.

    Self-care evokes very specific imagery: candles, face masks, massages or essential oils. The message of supporting your mental health has become synonymous with objects and price tags. To take care of yourself, first you must buy things. Taking care of yourself is a much more common topic than it was 10 years ago. Naturally, as the topic grew in popularity, capitalism somehow wormed its way into it.

    Wolfpack Welcome Week came to a grand conclusion with Packapalooza on Saturday, 12 years after the event’s debut at NC State. Hillsborough Street closed down to make room for hundreds of vendors, food trucks, student organizations and performers. The event lasted eight hours without a single dull moment. The long, blocked off street showcased booths selling jewelry, candles, coasters and creatively handmade knicknacks.
