IntroductionMélange is such a lovely word, meaning, basically, a hodgepodge. Doesn't it sound so much better? It is the proverbial “putting lipstick on a pig” type of statement. This saying is attributed to a radio host in San Francisco in 1985 when discussing the renovation of Candlestick Park, the city's outdoor baseball stadium (). He said the renovation was like putting lipstick on a pig, meaning it still was what it was before.

If you did a literature search using that term, you would find several articles associated with The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing. Lifelong learning is recognized as a critical component for professional competency, as we have long known. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing document, The Essentials (), refers to this activity as career-long learning (p. 9).

IntroductionIf I tried to list resources for patient safety, this editorial would be pages long; and I could simply provide a listing without any commentary. A major part of our role as nurses, no matter what our role in nursing is, relates to protecting and advocating for patients. Even in research protocols we focus on protecting the rights of patients. Then I read the June 2024 JAMA Viewpoint: “Protecting Participants Is Not the Top Priority in Clinical Research” ().

IntroductionIf you aren't fairly well overwhelmed by the numerous changes happening in health care, you haven't been paying attention or you are practicing in some obscure area of the world. Just when I am determined to catch up on reading a particular set of nursing journals, a slew of new issues of everything arrives. Yes, each issue has something I don't read in depth, and yes, I at least skim every article in each issue so I know what is going on in my field. And, yes, I remain behind.
