THAT SO MUCH of the debate on the BBC is about funding is a tribute to its enemies’ success in making a mountain out of a molehill. The cost of a TV licence (£169.50/year in 2024 with a range of easy payment options, equivalent to £3.25/week) is trivial for the great majority of households that have to pay: less than the cost of one takeaway coffee a week for the whole household.

Armando Iannucci Take the fight back to WhitehallOnce again, the government comes to clip what it sees as the BBC’s unfettered wings. Governments in a panic do that, sooner or later, and it’s up to the BBC’s new chair to call them out on this. They’ve reneged on an agreement to fund the BBC properly: the licence fee has been frozen for the last two years, but was set to rise in line with inflation from 2024.

By Patrick Barwise and Peter York On Tuesday 6 June, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer : “I am definitely a supporter of the BBC… but it does need to understand its duties in relation to impartiality.” Questioned by Conservative MP Simon Jupp, she added: “I think that the BBC on occasion is biased, yes.” But she refused to give any specific examples. Many Conservatives’ criticisms of the BBC are much stronger than Frazer’s.
