It has been one year since workers at REI’s Downtown Austin store delivered a letter to management alleging the outdoor retailer targeted union-backing workers with disciplinary action and disregarded reports of sexual harassment among coworkers. Since then, workers say, things only have worsened. Their complaint letter no longer hangs on the break-room wall, as their union movement hangs by a thread.

Last week, the Texas State Board of Education held a public hearing where it heard nearly ten hours of comments on a new public school curriculum. The Texas Education Agency made the curriculum materials public in May, and since then, critics have claimed that the material’s use of Bible stories is inappropriate. The TEA, for its part, says that such stories are useful for historical and literary learning.

If you’ve done much driving around the Dallas, Houston or Austin areas, there’s a good chance you’ve driven on a toll road, or adjusted your route to avoid a toll road. According to new reporting from The Dallas Morning News, Texas has built more toll roads, bridges and tunnels in the last twenty years than almost all other states combined. Texas also has some of the harshest penalties in the nation for drivers who don’t pay tolls or pay them late.

Texans in parts of East and Southeast Texas have been enduring severe flooding – inundated by waters that have led to evacuations, boat rescues, submerged streets, lots of property damage and water levels not seen in almost five years. Along the banks of some rivers, the sky is dumping as much as 23 inches in some isolated areas.

The United Methodist Church is making some historic changes to its stance on LGBTQ+ clergy and related policies. Delegates from around the world are gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina right now for the church’s quadrennial General Conference, and there they voted to strike down the church’s LGBTQ clergy ban put in place some 40 years ago. They also voted that churches and clergy cannot be punished for holding same-sex marriages, nor punished for refusing to hold them.

Every couple of months, the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Politics Project surveys registered voters in the Lone Star State to check the political pulse. In its most recent poll, it looks ahead at which candidate voters favor in this year’s presidential election. The poll also looks at how voters with different political affiliations feel about issues like abortion, border security and more.

There’s actually a viral video of the moment when Marschner and her colleagues found out Google laid them off. They were addressing the Austin City Council when they got the news. The council was poised to approve a resolution supporting the union, but some behind-the-scenes pressure from Google delayed their vote. The Alphabet Workers Union decided to carry on with their planned speeches at City Council.

Houston’s Harris County is the most densely populated in the state, and like many other large Texas counties, it’s been dealing with a long standing issue that seems to be getting worse– overcrowded jails. Staffing has been cited as a problem, but local officials are also pointing fingers at the state, saying there have been extended delays in the transfers of people convicted of crimes to state custody. Sheriffs say they’re just not getting processed fast enough.

The city of Denver sent two city employees to El Paso last week to deliver some news in person – the city is making changes to its immigration policy. Specifically, Denver is shifting away from emergency sheltering and focusing on long-term housing and job training. Those services will be useful to asylum-seekers, but they’ll be available to far fewer people. Desiree Mathurin is a neighborhood reporter for the Denverite and Colorado Public Radio, and she joined Texas Standard to discuss this issue.
