For a man destined to become the box-office king of the Metropolitan Opera, Giacomo Puccini made a notably inauspicious New York debut. That happened in May 1898, eight and a half years before he actually first set foot in the city, and the venue was not the still-young (at fifteen) Metropolitan Opera House at Thirty-ninth Street but the older, smaller, much less prestigious Wallack’s Theatre, twenty-six blocks down Broadway.
