I addressed my local school board in Dawson County last Tuesday. Turns out, I was the second person in two years to speak during the public comment portion of a school board meeting or work session. That doesn’t include public hearings about the budget, setting the tax rate or the new statewide homestead exemption. Those hearings were all advertised well in advance. But, regular meetings? Why, I wondered, do so few residents talk at our school board meetings?

A reader emailed recently to point out a couple of grammatical errors in an article we published. We are always on guard to ensure that what we publish is correct, and correctly presented. That includes grammar. Another thing we do is write headlines. You don’t hear much about that. It’s not as simple as snatching a few words from the story and slapping them across the top. A good headline should encase the “news” of the story. The headline writer must read the story, understand its essence.

Early this year, I recounted an experience with my cardiologist in which I was made to wait nearly an hour beyond my appointment time to see the doctor. It was a 25-mile drive, and I’d arrived 10 minutes early to unravel any snags in paperwork which had already been completed and verified online. My frustration made the visit almost worthless. There is no medical device that adjusts to accurately record my vitals after I’ve endured a long wait.

Something exceptional happened last week, and only a handful of people witnessed it. It is true. I was third in line for checkout at a local grocery Sunday evening. At the front, two elderly men dressed in flannel shirts and worn coats stood bewildered when their cash cards failed at the register. Each tried his own card with no luck. Their groceries were already bagged and piled in the shopping cart, in limbo. Frustration filtered through the queue of about five people.
