SEYMOUR — New Albany closed out 2024 with a win. The Bulldogs beat Seymour 53-46 in a Hoosier Hills Conference clash — and the only game in the state — Tuesday afternoon inside Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium. After trailing 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, Class 4A No. 13 New Albany outscored the Owls 11-4 in the second and 20-14 in the third en route to victory. “Our defense was good today and that’s what we talked about at halftime,” New Albany head coach Jason Jones said.

There’s one very noticeable absence on this weekend’s hoops schedule. The Silver Creek Holiday Tournament, the state’s longest-running holiday event involving the same four teams (Charlestown, Clarksville, Providence and Silver Creek), took place for the 63rd straight year last December. However, that streak is over. The annual two-day tourney isn’t happening this year.

JEFFERSONVILLE — Visiting Floyd Central finished first in 19 of the 24 events on the way to a sweep of Hoosier Hills Conference- and sectional-rival Jeffersonville on Thursday night. The Highlanders won 11 events on the boys’ side in a 122-60 triumph while their girls won 113-67. Despite coming away with only five victories, the Red Devils set 33 season-best times and several lifetime bests. “I challenged them and I told them it was going to be a tiring week, saying ‘You need to step up and race.

CLARKSVILLE — Class 2A No. 4 Austin made very good use of the free throw line en route to a 60-44 win at Providence in a matchup of former sectional foes Tuesday night at the Larkin Center. Austin’s Brynn Owens led all scorers with 26 points — 14 coming from the charity stripe — to turn back the Pioneers’ upset bid. She also made six field goals in addition to her 14 for 18 shooting at the foul stripe. “I thought we guarded Owens extremely well,” Providence head coach Stacy Pendleton said.

SOUTHPORT — Jeffersonville head coach Sherron Wilkerson wrote the game plan for Saturday night’s Class 4A Top 10 showdown against Noblesville on a piece of paper. It included this nugget — control No. 10, Justin Curry II. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, they were unable to do so. The 6-foot-3 junior guard scored 18 points in the then-No. 8 Millers’ 64-54 triumph over fourth-ranked Jeff in the FORUM Tipoff Classic at Southport Fieldhouse.
