I recently preached on Jesus’s most revolutionary ethical teaching––love your enemies (Matt. 5:44). It stands as a Mount Everest among ethical instructions that both Christians and non-Christians respect. Yet, because we have a certain modern definition of love, it is easy to misunderstand Jesus’s teaching. What did Jesus actually mean by enemy love and how do we integrate it with Old Testament texts that seem to contradict it?

The Purpose of Luke’s WritingIf you think about it, Acts is kind of a funny name for a book, isn’t it? It immediately raises the question, “Whose acts? What acts?” Of course, the fuller name we find in our English Bibles for this book is Acts of the Apostles. Luke, the author of this book, didn’t actually give it that title. It wasn’t until the third century that the early church gave it this designation. Why might they have given it that title?

Wende ohne Ende in der Politik – mit der FDP als Möchtegern-Klassenprimus: Olaf Scholz' „Zeitenwende“ will sie eine „Wirtschaftswende“ und eine „Haushaltswende“ folgen lassen. Was in Wirklichkeit „Sozialstaatswende“ bedeutet – und mithin Sozialabbau. Jüngstes Beispiel dafür ist das am 13. Mai veröffentlichte Papier „Fünf Punkte für eine generationengerechte Haushaltspolitik“.

There’s only one imperative in the transfiguration narrative. The voice from the heavens tells the disciples, “Listen to him” (Matt. 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35). As many have rightly pointed out, this alludes to something told to Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15: “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him” (CSB). The transfiguration account affirms a new prophet like Moses has arisen.

Early Christians hammered out several statements about the identity of Jesus and affirmed we mustn’t merely say one thing about him but two things: Jesus is truly man and truly God. Even well-intentioned approaches can emphasize one of the truths and implicitly downplay the other. Advertise on TGCFor example, biblical theology helps us see Christ in the whole storyline of Scripture. Many characters from the Old Testament serve as types that help us understand the Messiah that was to come.
