MEDORA, N.D. — A yearslong legal dispute between a family that owns a ranch along the Little Missouri River in the heart of the Badlands and Billings County over a proposed bridge has reached an end. The Short family has signed a settlement agreement with Billings County to end the dispute. The county had acquired title to a strip of land through eminent domain on the Short Ranch, about 40 miles north of Medora, for a bridge.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — Defense lawyers argue that a conviction for a 1986 murder should be dismissed because prosecutors were “hell-bent” on winning a conviction and suppressed important witness statements that pointed to the defendant’s innocence. The petition on behalf of Werner Kunkel also produced new forensic evidence from pathologists — including the doctor who performed the autopsy of the murder victim — that also contradicts information presented to the jury.
