U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm attended the May 31 ribbon-cutting for Plant Vogtle, the first set of nuclear reactors built in the United States in nearly 30 years. I don’t understand how a state that is supposed to regulate its monopoly utilities in the public interest allowed Georgia Power to build a $36 billion nuclear facility that is 10 times more expensive than equivalent generation and that went nearly $20 billion over budget.

"We need two hundred of these by 2050. Two down, one hundred and ninety-eight to go," were her first words. There’s a lot I don’t understand about the world.

After 15 years of construction, on April 30, 2024, Georgia Power completed construction of two new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, Georgia. As a result, Georgia Power will increase residential rates 23.7 percent to pay for its construction, on top of the $1,000 Georgia Power has already collected from customers from an on-bill tariff. If Plant Vogtle is driving a 23.7 percent rate increase, why haven’t you heard that number before now?

We live in amazing times to experience the benefits of technology, not only with smartphones, computers and medicine, but especially for energy. The number of advancements in how energy is produced and delivered and stored is mind-boggling. Things like data analytics, virtual power plants and distributed energy mean the electricity grid is able to decarbonize affordably and rapidly, and it means people can be engaged in ways never before possible.
