Some days we may ask ourselves whether anyone else would be able to relate to the pain we’re experiencing or the perplexing things that happen behind closed doors. We quickly learn that suppression is a form of coping and secrets are for keeping. We’re told we’ll be punished or ostracized if we tell. We may carry the burden of protecting our family’s reputation on our shoulders. Telling would tarnish that. Yet silence is what causes harmful acts to continue.

If you're the eldest daughter, you are likely the keeper of the family. It's an important role, I suppose. It's also a very exhausting role. Not only are you seen as the confident, capable, responsible one, but you own it. You own all of it, the title, the diligence, the hyper-vigilance, and the silent heaviness intrinsically tied to it. I commented on Eldest Daughter Syndrome in Newsweek magazine, and the many ways it can have us feeling like a walking contradiction.

As a psychologist, I routinely hear many damaging myths about what mental health is and how treatment works. Some hold these myths to be truth, which lead them to suffer alone through deteriorating mental health. Whether it's due to everyday life stressors, relationship difficulties, the realities of racism, genetics, or all of the above, mental illness is real.
