It didn’t come easy, but the Washburn Castle Guards baseball team still captured its fourth consecutive Northern Lights Conference championship on May 22 at home with a decisive 12-2 defeat of the Drummond Lumberjacks. Whether the ‘Guards, 10-2 in the NLC, win the title outright — or share it with the gritty 9-2 Mellen Granite Diggers — was a matter which was decided in a Memorial Day Weekend game that pitted the ‘Diggers against the 8-3 host Hurley Northstars.

One more time honored Northland College tradition was remembered on May 14 when Northland students, faculty, alumni and supportive Bay-Area residents celebrated the ingenious festival known simply as Queeb. Held annually on Oct. 28 on the campus mall, this event was fittingly named Half-Queeb as a nod to it being marked not on 10-28 but, rather, 5-14.

Perhaps no two people involved with Northland College sports have contributed more to the Bay-Area college sports and entertainment community, over the past few years, than senior baseball player and recent graduate Jay Harris, and sports information director Mike Cooling. In addition to serving as catcher for the LumberJacks baseball team, Harris has become a local music favorite, possessing both a smooth baritone voice and slick guitar playing skills.

A rebuilding year is underway for the Ashland Oredockers boys tennis team. But the healthy number of athletes entering into the program, and the increasingly competitive play of the team, has third year coach Gary Stevens enthused. All this, despite the graduation of six seniors from 2024. “We’re a young team,” Stevens said. “But even with all this youth and inexperience we still have two wins, and we have played several teams very close.

Heart of Midlothian and Kilmarnock have agreed a deal to allow Derek McInnes to become the new manager at Tynecastle, the 53-year-old has revealed, although talks are still ongoing before the move can be finalised. The former Aberdeen manager will take charge of Kilmarnock's final two games of the season - including Sunday's visit by Hearts - before formally succeeding Neil Critchley, who was sacked as head coach after just six months.
