Denis Law (circled) was born in 1940 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The precocious young Law was often seen selling scratch cards door-to-door to raise funds for his junior team’s kit. Photograph: Mirrorpix/Alamy At the age of 14, Law was spotted by a Huddersfield scout and was invited for a trial, and despite the misgivings of the manager due to his small stature, was offered a contract. After an eye operation, he made his debut in 1956.
